Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Operations, the Housing Marketing & Communications Specialist is responsible for independent performance of the day-to-day marketing, communications, and outreach activities for Housing and Residence Life (HRL). The incumbent works on a broad range of projects involving the development and execution of department publications, printing, marketing campaigns, branding, and public and campus messaging. The incumbent oversees the design of all HRL marketing materials including but not limited to: creating, designing, and updating marketing content (print, newsletters, newspapers, web, social media, etc.). The incumbent develops marketing strategies and materials to assist in the promotion of HRL goals of effectively communicating with campus community members, maintaining full occupancy, and creating a positive image in support of the mission and vision of HRL. The incumbent develops positive working relationships with external and internal stakeholders, university staff, and faculty while working collaboratively with the HRL team to achieve marketing, communications, and engagement goals for the department. Must have a thorough knowledge of programs offered and applicable communications techniques, be able to work autonomously and exercise sound judgment and discretion in the completion of assignments and projects. Work involves daily contact with the department management team, housing and residence life staff, students, and other key constituencies
A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or related fields. Two years of full-time related professional or technical experience. Experience in storytelling, editing - especially on digital platforms. Planning and scheduling associated with marketing and communications projects. This position requires a current knowledge of: the fundamentals of marketing and marketing research and public affairs; web-based content management systems, web communication and marketing platforms, techniques, and formats; applicable software packages within the area of videography, photography, and graphic design; general practices, methods, and procedures related to marketing, brand management, communications, and consumer outreach; protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media; marketing and research techniques and methods; standard theories, practices, principles, and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media, marketing, and/or sports information areas; applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to written materials, news media, and confidentiality; interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages; and standard office and communication equipment. Incumbent must possess: strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles; strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Proficient writing, proofreading, and editing skills to quickly produce clear and concise standard documents for internal and external publication; excellent written and oral communication skills for effective communication in marketing collateral materials and for use with students, faculty/staff, management, and vendors; detail-oriented with strong time management skills and ability to manage changing priorities and critical deadlines; exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills; pleasant and courteous demeanor to provide friendly and solution-oriented service externally and internally with tact and professionalism; a collaborative spirit and strong team ethic; and strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relationships within the department and the campus community. Must have the ability to: use independent judgment to make decisions, interpret, and apply a wide range of policies and procedures; use discretion and confidentiality; work with individuals at all levels within the organization; understand issues from a broad strategic perspective; act as a representative to outside entities; take initiative and prioritize among multiple demands and deadlines; apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences; effectively use web technology to achieve communication, marketing, and student outreach goals; analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles; provide lead work direction; handle sensitive and confidential information; work occasional evenings and weekend hours to support special departmental events and initiatives; travel to conduct off-site photo/video shoots or participate in on and off-campus events/courses/training; independent performance of specialized or varied assignments related to marketing, communication, public affairs, publications development, student outreach, and research; work with complex and broad scope assignments that have a significant impact on the success of a project/campaign and the department. Incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
