Under general supervision of the Chair of the Biological Sciences Department, the full time Instructional Support Technician III (IST) will perform comprehensive support services for departmental curriculum with an emphasis towards the microbiology lab courses. The IST will: prepare instructional materials unique to the disciplines and courses served in the Department of Biological Sciences, with emphasis on microbiology related materials; plan the layout, develop work schedules to meet deadlines, prepare a variety of materials and equipment necessary for specific classes that may be running simultaneously; set up materials appropriate for various teaching lab activities including but not limited to microbiological samples, cultures, and microscope slides; organize student groups by setting up work stations associated with laboratory activities according to instructors' requests; generate picture boards and simple illustrations as needed for lab courses, such as signs for specific class sections; consult with faculty to discuss needs and develop plans; assist faculty and administration in the development of new instructional activities; assist faculty and administration in the planning and implementation of new services or in problem solving; order supplies and reagents needed for various instructional activities; identify possible supplies vendors and assist in adding these vendors to the University system; order supplies for state supported faculty activities, as needed; solve any associated problems that arise including problems with shipping and receiving; maintain a monthly record of purchases and associated charge-back accounts for departmental accounting purposes; maintain, store, and track supplies and reagents and report to department; clean and maintain scientific equipment such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, electrophoresis units, centrifuges, refrigerators, pH meters, balances, shakers, incubators and other equipment as needed; reach out to professional services and organize equipment service as needed Store, inventory, dispense, and dispose of any hazardous materials use in accordance with appropriate regulations; maintain specialized equipment used in molecular and cellular biology (eg., flow cytometer, Illuminia sequencer) and assist their use in class; assist faculty and administration by acting as a resource for materials and equipment use; and serve as liaison with other segments of the University as necessary for proper maintenance of relevant materials.
A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline from an accredited college of university and at least two years of relevant experience in the ordering, purchasing, accounting, and supporting of technical materials, supplies and/or equipment. Incumbent must have knowledge of: procedures and practices relating to providing support services with particular emphasis on microbiology; working with specialized instrumentation for molecular and/or cellular biology; procedures and practices related to ordering and inventory; and of the materials, supplies, and equipment. Incumbent must have the ability to: operate relevant scientific equipment and computer interfaces; plan, organize, and schedule activities; maintain records; adjust and perform simple maintenance on technical and scientific equipment; and communicate in a professional manner and read and write at a level suitable for records maintenance and project needs.
