Prepares surfaces for painting and finishing to include repair or replacement of drywall and ceiling tiles; Performs minor associated maintenance such as replacement of baseboards, light covers, emergency exit signs, light and outlet switch plates. Applies undercoats and finish coats using the full range of application methods including brush, roll, and spray; mixes and matches paints and finishes; performs sand and water blasting; erects scaffolding and/or staging for painting projects; paints signs and parking lot/roadway markings; advises in the selection and storage of painting materials; inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspects related work performed by contractors; estimates cost, time and materials for painting projects; participates in the maintenance and operations of a paint shop; cleans and maintains painting and finishing materials, tools, and equipment used in the performance of duties; performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintains a safe and clean work environment. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as paint thinners, lead and asbestos. Performs preventative maintenance per shop schedule. Responds to graffiti calls within 24 hours and, if immediate repair is not possible, apply temporary fix.

The abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter's apprenticeship program.
